I’m still astonished by one particular statistic that stands out in the recently-ended Chicago-Phoenix series: 40-38. From first glance, those numbers would indicate that whatever statistic they refer to was closely matched. Think again.
40-38 is the total number of shots on goal by the Chicago Blackhawks in game 6 to the total number of shots on goal by the Phoenix Coyotes in games 5 and 6 combined. That’s right, the Hawks managed to send a puck towards the net over twice as often as the Phoenix Coyotes in game 6 and managed to put not a single puck actually in the net.
